tzNIC adopts the new domain registration refund policy Print E-mail
For the past 3 years of operations, tzNIC has encountered a number of domain registration challenges such as registrants requesting for domain name renaming, say “bxbybz.co.tz” to “bxbz.co.tz”, etc. “bx”,” by”, “bz” could be the letters representing names of three business partners. In case partner “by” decides otherwise then a need may arise for domain renaming to “bxby.co.tz”. Under the current domain registration rules, domain name modification does not include renaming the domain. With the new policy there is an opportunity to rename a domain that is registered within a period of 7 days. The reasons for renaming the domain names could be as a result of internal admin issues (as explain above), availability of a domain during payment and unavailability of a domain during registration, etc.

This policy, approved by tzNIC PAC during its 28th meeting, is expected to address the above situations. The policy is called “Domain registration refund policy” and it states that:
 “In regard to domain renaming or deletion few days after registration:
  • 60% of the registration fee will be refunded if a deletion request is received within 7 working days after registration;
  • 40% of the registration fee will be paid for renaming the registered domain name if the request is received within 7 working days after registration. tzNIC will have to ensure that the domain is deleted before refund;
  • 100% registration fee will be refunded for a domain that is paid for but is not available or can’t be registered”
Note: The refund to registrars will be in terms of credit top up and not cash.
