tzNIC charges a one time registration fee of Tshs 25,000.00 (Usd 30.00) for a domain under all Second Level Domains (SLDs) categories with the exception of .sc SLD which is charged Tshs 5,000.00 (Usd 5.00). The registration fee is usually paid together with the first year's maintenance fee.

For all domains registered under the available SLDs (with the exception of .sc SLD), the annual maintenance fee is Tshs 20,000.00 (Usd 25.00). The annual maintenance fee for a domain registered under .sc SLD is Tshs 5,000.00 (Usd 5.00).

The purpose for the fees is to cover the costs for maintaining the .tz registry interms of hardware, software, human resource, utility, office space rentals, etc. The collected fee is also intended for facilitation of other activities and events related to internet issues locally, regionally and Internationally.

Since the company is not operating for profit, the fee has been set just to meet the sustainability goal. As such, the future fee structure will depend on the domains volume and will be inversely proportional to it.

Accredited registrars do pay differently as compared to registrants who opt to register domain names direct with tzNIC. Registrars usually pay a lumpsum amount of money at once to be able to register a number of domains throughout the year. For every domain registered a certain amount (depending on the category of the domain registered) is deducted from the deposited amount. If the remaining balance reaches below the amount required for a domain registration, the registrar automatically is blocked from making any registration. The minimum deposits are set by tzNIC.
